Angela Vaughan
I paint because it is in my soul… That part of you that you know is there, but somehow it eludes one for the most part. It sits quietly dormant, just waiting for you to notice.
When I Paint, my soul can speak, sing and dance, play, explore… search and question.
During covid lockdowns, I was fortunate enough to have my art as an anchor to some kind of normality. The quietness of lockdown life also gave me time for reflection and exploration of my art.
I now have an established routine and art practice.
The paintings I create are mostly abstract in their design, referencing (big) questions of humanity and spirit.
Is there another dimension or universe?
Is there life after death?
What is on the other side?
Where do we go?
How do we get there?
I use obscured layers, partially revealed shapes, and translucent marks, layers over layers, to acknowledge the mystery of life.
My work will often have reference to liminal spaces, paths bridges, traces, residue.
My process is very much informed by ideas of meditation, mindfulness, being in the moment, allowing flow, exploring possibilities and an acceptance of the unknown. (Faith).
About the Work
Each of my paintings are created through a process of repeated layers and as such, each painting could not be replicated. I combine my natural instinct for painting with intentional marks and considered decisions, exploring how to represent my soul’s voice … they may suggest vibrational energy fields, molecular formations, spiritual dimensions, and life’s pathways..
Translucent glazes and semi removed paint, and imprinted layers, all act as a veil and show the mystery that is the soul and the universe.
Overlaid images are pieced together. . Interjections and lines can act as both a separation and a threshold.
My paintings are open to interpretation.
I am offering the viewer a pause, a meditative moment, and a humble attempt to reveal the soul.
